Why the Wildflower Granny Square Blanket for the Sweater Weather Essentials Blog Hop?
You might be wondering why I choose to design a Wildflower Daisy Granny Square Blanket Crochet Pattern for a Sweater Weather Blog Hop? You would especially wonder this if you’ve been around my blog before. I specialize in Modern Crochet for Nurseries and Littles, and that usually involves a lot of amigurumi nursery decor. Sooooo, why the granny square blanket?
Honestly, the inspiration came from the anticipated birth of a co-worker’s new baby! She and her husband have struggled to get pregnant, and after much trying and anticipation they are having their first daughter at the beginning October! Her nursery them is WILDFLOWERS!!! How beautiful!
So, I wanted something to complement her nursery decor and I’ve always wanted to design a granny square blanket……. SO, it was a perfect opportunity! Hence, the Wildflower Granny Square Blanket pattern was designed! (P.S. I hope to share some pictures of the new baby girl with my Wildflower Granny Square blanket on IG when she is born!!!)
What yarns did I use for the Wildflower Granny Square Crochet Blanket?
I usually prefer to work with worsted weight acrylic yarns, and I’ve been excited to try Hobby Lobby’s Yarn Bee Soft and Sleek Yarn in the colors, clay and wheat. The white yarn used in the blanket design was I Love This Yarn also by Hobby Lobby in the color antique white.
I don’t live close to a Hobby Lobby, so it took a special trip by my brother to buy the desired yarn for this project. You can watch my brother’s adventures and my Hobby Lobby Yarn Unboxing on my YouTube Channel here:
What if you don’t live close to Hobby Lobby?
If you’re like me, and you don’t live close to Hobby Lobby and you can’t easily access their yarn, then I highly recommend using:
I highly recommend using a worsted weight acrylic yarn when making granny squares for several reasons, including:
- Beautiful stitch definition
- Easy on the hands/wrists
- Abundant color choices

THE CENTER
Using color A, 5.5 mm hook:
*Note* all beginning chs do not count as a st.
Rnd 1: Make a MC and hdc 9 into the ring, insert your hook into the first st, but do NOT pull through as we will be changing colors. (9)
Cut your yarn, and keep the loop on your hook.
THE PETALS
Pull through with the new yarn to complete the sl st. *Note* The ps should pop out to the wrong side as seen in the special stitches section above:
Rnd 2: Ch 2, TURN, *ps, ch 1, repeat from* to end of rnd, insert your hook into the first ps, but do NOT pull through as we will be changing colors. (9 ps)

THE GRANNY SQUARE
Pull through with the new yarn to complete the sl st, now continue on:
Rnd 3: Ch 2, TURN, and *dc into the top of the first ps, dc in sp between the ps, then dc into top of ps, in the next sp between the ps’s work a dc-cluster, ch 1, and dc-cluster all into the same sp repeat from,* to end of rnd, once finished you will have 1 st left (the top of the ps), do NOT work into it, sl st to join. (36 dc’s)
Note: Typically you would ch 1 after ea dc-cluster, but I found I like the look better if you do NOT ch 1 except for in the corners.
Rnd 4: Ch 2, *sk 3 sts, dc-cluster between the sts, sk 3 sts, corner, sk 3 sts, dc-cluster, repeat from* to end of rnd, insert hook into first st, but do NOT pull through because we will change colors. (16 granny clusters)
Corners = dc-cluster, ch 1, dc-cluster all into same ch sp
*Note* the essence is: skip 3 sts, make a dc-cluster. Once you reach the corners, dc-cluster ch 1, and dc-cluster again into the same sp.
GRANNY SQUARE EDGING
Pull through, with the new yarn to complete the sl st, now continue on:
Rnd 5: Ch 1, hdc blo in ea st, in corners, (into the blo of the ch) hdc 2 ch 1, and hdc 2 all into same ch, then continue on, sl st to join. (64)

Using 9 Wildflower Granny Squares, join them 3 across by 3 high for a 3×3 blocked lovey blanket.
The joining recommendations for the baby blanket and throw blanket can be found in the purchased pdf pattern.
BLANKET BORDER
We will start in any corner of your choice and work 3 rnds. To start, make sure the front side is facing up
Rnd 1: Ch 1, for all corners: hdc 2, ch 1, and hdc 2, into the corner,
For the straight part: *ch 1, sk 1 st, and hdc blo into next 2 sts, repeat* to end of rnd, sl st to first st to join.
*Note* At this point, I switched to color B.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first hdc, then ch 4, and sc in first ch-sp, *ch 4, sc in next ch sp, in the corners, sc, ch 4, and sc into the ch sp, repeat from* to end of rnd, sl st to join.
*Note* if you have an extra space, just make a sc into it. For Rnd 3 you will ONLY be working into the chain spaces.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, *sc in first ch sp, dc 5 in next ch sp, repeat from* to end of rnd, sl st to first st to join.
Tie off, and weave in tails.
