What are different color combinations for the granny stitch stocking?
The variations in color combinations is innumerable with this granny stitch stocking. Here are just a few ideas that I came up with:
- Solid color on the boot of the stocking with a complimentary faux fur yarn on the cuff.
- Alternating red & white stripes on the boot with a different complimentary faux fur yarn on the cuff.
- Solid color on the boot with alternating stripes of faux fur yarns on the cuff.
As a family favorite tradition, we always watch The Grinch during the Christmas season. So, I decided to create a Crochet Grinch Stocking to celebrate our tradition.

dc-cluster-dec
Dc 2 into first sp, then dc 1 into next sp. On the next rnd the 3 sts, will count as ONE cluster.
PATTERN NOTES:
- Between each granny cluster, do NOT ch 1 as it makes too many holes.
- You may need to adjust the hook sizes depending on what weight of yarn you use for the stocking and cuff.
- If desired, the ch 2 to begin each rnd can count as your first dc.
Toe
Using color A and 5mm crochet hook:
*Note* For whole pattern, sl st into first dc of each round.
*Note* Ch 2 will be at the beginning of the first cluster on alternative rounds.
Rnd 1: Make a magic circle, ch 2, dc 15 into ring, sl st to join. (15 sts/5 clusters)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, dc-cluster between the 3 and 4th st around, sl st to join. (5 clusters)
Rnd 3: Ch 2, dc-inc-cluster in each sp around, sl st to join. (10 clusters)
*Note* some of the clusters for this round will fall between the cluster increases in round 3.
Rnd 4: Ch 2, dc-cluster in each sp around, sl st to join. (10 clusters)
Rnd 5: Ch 2, *dc-cluster in first sp, dc-inc-cluster in next sp, repeat from* to end of rnd, sl st to join. (15 clusters)
*Note* some of the clusters for this round will fall between the cluster increases in round 5.
Rnds 6-8: Ch 2, dc-cluster in each sp around, sl st to join (3 rnds). (15)
Rnd 9: Ch 2, dc-cluster in first 3 sps, dc-cluster-dec over next 2 sps, dc-cluster in next 5 sps, dc-cluster-dec over next 2 sps, dc-cluster in last 3 sps. (13 clusters)
Rnds 10-17: Ch 2, dc-cluster in each sp around, sl st to join. (13 clusters)
Do NOT tie off, continue to heel.
Heel
Using color A and 5mm crochet hook:
At this point you are going to begin the heel part of stocking, so you will work several rows of decreases, then 4 rows of increases (see pic 1).
*Note* For the heel, you will work into the SPACES and STITCHES.
Row 18: Ch 2, dc-cluster in first 7 sps. (7 clusters)
Row 19: Ch 2, TURN, dc in first st, dc-cluster in next 6 sps, dc in last st. (6 clusters)
Row 20: Ch 2, TURN, dc in first st, dc-cluster in next 5 sps, dc in last st. (5 clusters)
Row 21: Ch 2, TURN, dc in first st, dc-cluster in next 4 sps, dc in last st. (4 clusters)
Now you are going to begin the increase rows!
Row 22: Ch 2, TURN, dc-cluster in first st, dc-cluster in next 3 sps, dc-cluster in last st. (5 clusters)
Row 23: Ch 2, TURN, dc-cluster in first st, dc-cluster in next 4 sps, dc-cluster in last st. (6 clusters)
Row 24: Ch 2, TURN, dc-cluster in first st, dc-cluster in next 5 sps, dc-cluster in last st. (7 clusters)
Row 25: Ch 2, TURN, dc-cluster in first st, dc-cluster in next 6 sps, dc-cluster in last st. (8 clusters)
Row 26: Ch 2, TURN, dc-cluster in first st, dc-cluster in next 7 sps, dc-cluster in last st. (9 clusters)
The heel part is now done, and you are going to crochet up the sides (see pic).
Fold the top half of the heel back, (see pic 2), then Ch 1, turn, working into both layers, sc 6 up the side. Tie off, and then working down the other side (see pic 3), sc 6, working into both layers, TURN, flip up the rows which are folded down, and begin Rnd 27 (see pic 4).
Finishing body of stocking:
Using color A and 5mm crochet hook:
Rnd 27: Ch 2, dc-cluster in next 8 sps across top of heel (see pic 4 on previous page), then dc3tog where the heel and stocking connect, dc-cluster in next 5 sps, then dc3tog where heel and stocking connect once again, sl st to join. (15 clusters)
Rnd 28-53: Ch 2, dc-cluster in each sp around, sl st to join (26 rnds). (15 clusters)
Cut yarn, and continue to Cuff.
Cuff
Using color B and 5mm crochet hook:
Rnds 54-59: Ch 2, dc-cluster in each sp across, sl st to join (6 rnds). (15 clusters)
