In my recent YouTube video, I give you 20 different scrap yarn projects that you can make to use up your scrap yarn. After I compiled those 20 ideas for using up scrap yarn, I got inspired to create my own Yarn Jar! I have used an ugly coconut oil plastic jar for years to put my yarn scraps in as I crocheted. Now, I’ve taken that ugly yarn and turned it into something beautiful that I LOVE having next to me as I crochet.
Make a beautiful yarn jar with me out of my yarn scraps
MATERIALS:
-Jar (plastic jar, mason jar, glass jar, jar of your choice)
-Yarn (scrap yarn of any color or texture)
-Glue (hot glue gun or elmer’s glue
-Scissors
STEPS TO GLUEING YOUR YARN JAR
- Organize Your Yarn: Decide how you want to arrange the yarn on your jar.
- Start Wrapping: Start by anchoring the end of the yarn outside the jar with glue. Hold it in place and start wrapping the yarn around in a spiral or circular pattern. Continue to place glue on the jar and tightly wrap the yarn around the jar moving down the jar with little space between the wraps of yarn on the jar.
3. Complete your Wrapping: Continue adding yarn in your desired pattern until the jar is completely covered. If you’re using different colors or types, you can arrange them to create a visually appealing pattern.
4. Add Decorations (Optional): You can decorate the jar by adding rosettes, roses, bows, labels, ribbons, or stickers to make it more personalized. For example, you might label the jar with the types of yarn inside or add your crochet business logo on the outside.

What can my scrap yarn jar be used for?
A yarn jar can be quite versatile beyond just holding yarn. Here are some creative uses for your yarn jar:
- Organizing Supplies:
- Craft Tools: Store small craft tools like crochet hooks, stitch markers, or even measuring tapes.
- Thread and Buttons: Use it to keep sewing threads, buttons, or other small sewing supplies organized.
- Pens, Pencils, and Markers: Give as a gift to a teacher or homeschool mom for them to put their writing utensils in and set on their desk.
- Decorative Display:
- Colorful Accent: Use the yarn jar as a decorative element in your home. It can be a colorful addition to shelves, tables, or desks.
- Seasonal Decor: Decorate your yarn jar to match different holidays, then use it as a vase with seasonal flowers in it.
- Gifts:
- Craft Kits: Fill the jar with small skeins of yarn and a pair of knitting needles or crochet hooks as a gift for a fellow crafter.
- Mini Projects: Add patterns or instructions for a small project along with some yarn, making it a thoughtful gift.
- Storage for Other Items:
- Candies or Treats: Use the jar to hold candy, mints, or other small treats, especially if you want a touch of handmade charm.
- Office Supplies: Keep paper clips, rubber bands, or push pins in the jar for easy access and organization.
- Creative Projects:
- Miniature Creations: Turn the jar into a mini diorama or a small terrarium, adding a touch of creativity to your decor.
With a little imagination, your yarn jar can serve many functions beyond just holding yarn.
